The core of every great story on HarmonyTALK is a person who refused to let their dream stay on paper. This week, we introduce you to Jeff Braverman, a leader whose journey is a masterclass in building something lasting for generations of children.
Jeff Braverman is a true Dreamer and Doer. He co-founded Camp Nesher and served as its sole director for nearly 30 years. His original goal was simple: create a great summer camp experience rooted in community and tradition. Inclusion was not part of the original plan. It emerged early on, unexpectedly, when a parent asked whether their wheelchair-bound child with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy could be accommodated and welcomed.
That moment became one of the defining decisions of Jeff’s career. With no clear roadmap and little precedent, he chose to move forward because it was “the right thing to do.” The result was a community where belonging became a lived value.
Located in Lakewood PA, Camp Nesher is part of NJY Camps, a 105-year-old organization and one of the world’s largest camping agencies, awarding up to $2 million in scholarships each year. In addition, NJY brings more than 40 years of experience in inclusive programming through its Round Lake inclusion program at its Milford PA property which includes Camps Nah-Jee-Wah, Cedar Lake and Teen Camp.
What makes Jeff’s story even more inspiring is that his leadership in camp life has always been paired with a creative life in music. As a co-founder of the duo Shoresh and a band leader of the Nafshenu Orchestra, Jeff has recorded original music and performed nationwide. Directing a large camp operation while maintaining an active musical career is the definition of a driven doer.
After three decades at Camp Nesher, Jeff became Director Emeritus, where he remains focused on long-term planning and ensuring the mission endures. Second only to his own three children and their spouses, his greatest pride, he says, are his “camp kids,” the thousands of young people shaped by a camp built on belonging.
Tune in to hear how Jeff Braverman’s commitment to action helped create a community that plays, grows, and raises each other up, together.
